In this month's Scotchtoberfest whisky tasting set we're featuring not one but two delectable drams from a relatively new distillery, Lochlea.
Lochlea is an independently-owned distillery in Kilmarnock, South Ayrshire. The distillery is based on the farm where Robert Burns called his home throughout his formative years, from 1777 until his father’s death in 1784.
Initially led by the experience and expertise of distillery manager Malcolm Rennie, Lochlea is now under the management of ex-Laphroaig Distillery Manager John Campbell. The team has been quietly producing, casking, and maturing their whisky over the last few years, patiently waiting to share the fruits of their labour with the world.
Their first core release is Lochlea Our Barley, and it's our 'Whisky Under £50' today.

Our Barley is Lochlea's ongoing core single malt whisky. It sits alongside their seasonal limited editions whiskies. Lochlea's Master Blender has carefully honed the recipe, based on a cask make up which includes bourbon, sherry and STR casks. These create depth and layers of flavour in this lovely single malt scotch.
Lochlea Our Barley Tasting Notes
Nose: Pear syrup, fruit bon bons, warm cut grass, marmalade.
Palate: Golden syrup, pepper, rye bread, macadamia nuts, cream soda.
Finish: Long with a lasting orange beeswax note.
