Old Perth Cask Strength
You may recognise this recommendation, as it featured as our Whisky Under £50 in October 2021. Old Perth Cask Strength is one of a range of four sherried cask whiskies from Morrison's Distillers, under the Old Perth name. The other three are The Original, 12 Year Old, and the Vintage release (last year it was a 1996, this year it's a 1994). This is a great value sipper, priced at £41.95. Brig O' Perth 14 Year Old
Again, keen readers of The Dram Team's blog may recognise this gem. I love it so much I've already reviewed Brig O' Perth 14 Year Old here, as part of our Whisky Under £50 series. Glenfarclas 15 Year Old
Glenfarclas Distillery is synonymous with sherry cask whiskies. They produce some of the most luscious sherried drams you'll find. My personal favourite is their 15 Year Old. Bottled at 46% it's both complex, and drinkable, at the same time. And, it's perfect for this time of year, boasting a big, juicy, Christmas pudding profile. Lakes Distillery Whiskymaker's Reserve No.5
The Lakes Distillery is another Dram Teamer favourite. And this particular expression, their Whiskymaker's Reserve No.5, featured in our May 2022 box. 80-90% of the casks used to age this English single malt were first-fill first-fill Spanish, American and virgin oak casks, seasoned with Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry. Firkin 49 Tullibardine 2012
Mike Collings is a bit of an industry legend. And his whiskies are so excellent we had an entire box dedicated to his drams, back in November 2021. To make Firkin 49, Mike took a single cask Tullibardine 2012 and re-racked it into a cask made from two kinds of oak (American ex-bourbon staves and French virgin oak), seasoned with not one but two kinds of sherry (oloroso and amontillado). It's a soft, nutty dram which demonstrates a more artistic use of sherry casks. Priced at £69, you can find Firkin 49 Tullibardine 2012 here.
