Whisky Under £50 Review 2: Bain's Whisky

Welcome to the second installment of our regular Whisky Under Fifty reviews, where we review a different whisky (or whiskey) that you can buy for less than £50! If you’d like to know more about what we're doing with this series, read our introduction post here.Today’s whisky is Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky

Bain's Cape Mountain South African Whisky

We talked about Bain's South African parent distillery, James Sedgwick, in this recent post about world whisky. Bain's is their single grain whisky brand, and it's arguably the most well known South African whisky. Thanks to the climate, whisky ages much more quickly there. This is what gives Bain's its soft sweetness and well-roundedness at a much younger age than you'd find in an equivalent Scotch.

Also, fun fact: the guy who runs the distillery, Andy Watts, used to be a professional cricketer before turning his sights to whisky making. Pretty interesting career, we think!

Review

Colour:

Deep Gold

Nose:

Leather, rubber tyres, lemon and vanilla cream.

Palate:

Some fresh green apples and pears and more citrus peel coming through. More hints of rubber, like new tennis shoes. Some dry oaky spice on the back washed down with a subtle sweetness.

Finish:

Short - Medium

Overall Thoughts:

Quite simple and fresh, but then there's nothing wrong with that. That really interesting hint of rubberiness could be a "love-it-or-hate-it" flavour though. Overall, we think Bain's would make a great highball whisky. Serve it long and top with soda - perfect for these hot summer days!

Main flavour category: Fragrance

Get it here for £27.95.

Try Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky if you like...

If you like sweeter blended whiskies like Chivas Regal, or fragrant Japanese whiskies like Suntory Chita, you'll probably enjoy Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky too.
