SLYRS, Port Cask Finish
We start our top-notch world tasting tour in Germany. Slyrs distillery was established in 2007 in Bavaria and is an award-winning maker of single malts. This release was finished for nine months in tawny port casks and is delightfully fresh and summery.
Tasting notes
Nose: Spicy and fruity with the scent of red berries, caramel and vanilla.
Palate: Multi-layered.
Finish: Complex and harmonious.
Fleurieu Distillery, Englishman in New York
Our travels get somewhat muddled up here, as we enjoy an Australian dram named after an English musician's song about being in New York. No Sting here though, just a divine mix of port and sherry cask whisky that is wonderfully pudding-y (and another award winner to boot!).
Tasting notes:
Nose: Golden syrup, slightly earthy, with poached peaches and dried apricots, malted barley and honey sweetness.
Palate: Honey on toast, brown sugar, dried fruit spice, candied orange peel.
Finish: Long, hints of glace ginger, and quince paste, followed by sea salt roasted chestnuts, luscious and lingering.
Americana, Single Barrel Rye, Aged 7 Years
We commit to America properly now, with a whopping and spicy cask strength rye. The high-rye mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley combines with a maturation of 7 years in new American white oak to deliver liquid that is everything a decent rye whiskey ought to be.
Tasting notes:
Caramel and vanilla forward notes fade to a complex spice and smoky body. The rye spice in the body carries into a long finish.
Stauning, Single Maple Syrup Cask
Things get confused again with a second single cask rye…made in Denmark…aged in a Maple Syrup cask...from Vermont! The sister cask to this unusual barrel won World's Best Single Cask Rye at 2023's World Whisky Awards, so safe to say the Danes know what they are doing here.
Tasting notes:
Grassy, apple-forward and spicy, almost menthol notes hint at rye qualities, while raisins and currants become more prominent on the palate. The finish is warming with fresh ginger in with a grounding earthiness.
Mackmyra, Identitet
We stay in Scandinavia to explore a Swedish single malt. "Identity" speaks to Mackmyra's roots: Swedish oak and juniper smoke. They combine juniper twigs with local peat, and for the first time ever, mature it in virgin Swedish oak casks. A vibrant encounter between big personalities, in their words!
Tasting notes:
Nose: Delightful aromas of peat, sweet caramel, crystalised citrus peel, and mango.
Palate: A warm, smooth palate reveals well integrated smoke, sweet nuts, and chocolate.
Finish: A dry, complex and long finish.
Overeem, Sherry Cask Matured Cask Strength
We head down south again to warm up, and BOY will this Aussie banger help! At a whopping 60% ABV and brimming with luscious sherry cask influence, this Tasmanian devil really warms the heart and soul!
Tasting notes:
Nose: Cocoa, dark chocolate, charred oak and burnt toffee, rum soaked raisins, cinnamon, almonds, sweet spice and Christmas cake.
Palate: Sweet spice, cinnamon, stewed dark fruits, burnt toffee, maple syrup, caramel and shaved almonds and fruit cake.
Finish: Long, lightly charred almonds, subtle cocoa and stewed dried fruits.
