The Isle of Raasay Distillery is a young but up-and-coming producer in the world of Scotch whisky. Established in 2014, it is the first legal distillery on the Isle of Raasay, a rugged little island off Scotland’s west coast.
Founders Alasdair Day and Bill Dobbie wanted to craft a whisky that truly captures the island’s wild spirit, quite literally: using water from Raasay’s own mineral-rich springs and Scottish barley that thrives in the island's cool coastal air.
By 2017, they were distilling with a mission to create a single malt that tastes unmistakably of Raasay. Their approach is anything but standard: they combine peated and unpeated barley and age their whisky in six types of casks, including ex-Bourbon, virgin oak, and wine casks, all contributing to their signature balanced, smoky yet fruity character.
Raasay Distillery is now as much a bucket-list whisky destination as it is a working distillery, with incredible on-site accomodation in the lovingly restored Borodale House. Visitors can explore the full whisky-making process from malting to maturation, and get a taste of their creative whisky-making and some excellent food to boot.
The distillery team are strongly committed to sustainability, bringing jobs and eco-friendly practices to the island. In just a few years, they’ve already made Raasay an unmissable stop for any whisky lover.
